I agree that using wordpress.com would be a horrible solution but for some starting out it may be the best. There is a <a href="http://gainesvilledetailing.com/wordpress-car-dealership-plugin/" rel="nofollow">Wordpress Car Sales Plugin</a> Sales Plugin put out by Wp1stop that I reviewed with screenshots. This along with a standalone installation on your own hosting could be a good choice for auto dealers.

Hi Bruce thanks for contributing. You are absolutely correct about the wordpress software being very mailable. You just do not get that same flexibility at wordpress.com.

This site has plenty of custom hacks as well as many others I have done for others.

I was completely referring to wordpress.com as their hosted solution not the script found at wordpress.org

Isn't this website a Wordpress site?

Anyway, I have to say that the majority of the above is not correct. I know that almost all of the points were about the free Wordpress.com account but the #1 point about not being flexible is completely false. If you know PHP and CSS you've got a very powerful, extremely flexible platform to do whatever you need. While you may not be able to find just the right plug-in, you can always build your own and the documentation and community support is amazing. Points #1, #4 and #5 are completely misleading.

Glad I read this entire thing, because I was so worried you were going to promote Blogger instead, and man, I'd have hated that. Between the two, I much prefer people be on Wordpress.com, but overall, you're right, having your own blog on your own domain is really the way to go if you're going to be a professional.

Another tip. When you host your own WordPress Automotive Blog, make sure you load the "All-In-One" SEO plugin as well as the Sitemap Plugin.

I just wanted to add that there are a number of third party companies that provide great skins for WordPress so that when you host your own WP blog, it can be dazzling and not the typical dull format that comes by default.

Believe me, importing from one blog to another is a PAIN!! Especially if you're importing from typepad. I just migrated http://www.dealerrefresh.com over from typepad to a self hosted wordpress and it was a lot of work. Get it right the first time and go with Wordpres.org.
